Hi Nooni,
The first thing you should do is call your local police department: find their =non-emergency= number in the blue pages of your phone book (or inside the front cover, depending on your book), and just ask them if this sounds funny. Either way, you'll know for sure.
If it checks out as OK, the simplest way to get a car's ownership and repair history is to buy a copy of them from Carfax.com. It's not that expensive, and is pretty quick and painless. Insist the owner pays for this, but that it be sent to you, directly!
If you want another option, you can always call the owner's insurance company yourself. Since the owner -has to- have car insurance (if he doesn't, don't touch that car!), you can call them directly, tell them your interested in buying it. Ask them for the complete accident -and- maintenance history, and anything else they know about the car, besides actual dollar amounts and other private info, of course! They'll undoubtedly ask you to get a form signed by the owner agreeing to release this information, which they can mail or even just email to you. Again, if he doesn't agree to tell you what you need to know, he's a crook. Run from the deal.
Hope this helps you, Nooni

www.carfax.com You have to pay to get it but it shows you when the vehicle was first registered, and where it was registered, whether it be a dealer, or an individual. Any accidents, flood damage, anything like that. As far as the 58,000 miles goes, It was probably a loaner. If you check the history and the only record that it shows is the dealer, then you, the car was probably a loaner that the dealer lended to other people when they worked on their car.
