It appears that most people in the south(I'm Canadian) talk way more about colleges than university.

In Canada, colleges are for those people looking to enter trades(agri, plumbers, etc) or those wishing to upgrade. Universities are for those who want to become a professional. Pre-doctor, and lawyer training is also done in universities. I took my teacher training in a university in a 5-year program.

People use the word "college" to mean university, most of the time. In general, the concept of a university is more respected, since many colleges have changed their names to university, but none that I know of have gone in the other direction. However, when Americans say that they are going to an institution of higher education, they generally refer to it as "college", whether they are referring to Harvard, MIT or Yale, or to Podunk Community College & Technical Institute.
