FAFSAs are processed on a rolling basis throughout the year. FAFSAs submitted electronically (online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov) take only a few days to be processed. FAFSAs submitted on paper can take several weeks to be processed -- sometimes up to a month or longer. These days, most people submit their FAFSAs online to avoid delays and the kinds of mistakes that happen when people hand-write their information.

The official FAFSA deadline for 2007-08 is June 30, 2007. However, most schools set their own deadlines much earlier than this. If March 1st is your deadline, then it was set by the school (not the government). FAFSAs are not processed by the school -- they are mailed to and processed by Department of Education's Central Processing Center. This means that your school will never see the postmark on your FAFSA. They might, therefore, not know that you turned it in on or near their deadline. I'm sure they will still accept your application, but you might not be eligible for as much money as you would have if you submitted it on time.

The Dept of Education are going to put the day they received your fafsa...not by the postmark date. I would recommend completing the fafsa electronically. It will date stamp the day that it was completed.
