How you do it will probably depend on where you are in the process of getting married as well as the circumstances that are leading you to make this decision. I broke off an engagement when after a year of talking of marriage nothing seemed like it was progressing and I started to question my fiance's commitment to me in general. If you really have decided to end it, just be honest and straightforward with everyone and they will definitely support you. NO ONE wants to see you go through with a marriage that is for life if you don't really desire it. Good luck and best wishes!

Face to face and tell the truth, he deserves to know why his heart is being broken. This is always a hard thing, but better a broken engagement than a divorce!

No, but I have turned down an engagement ring. Be sensitive to the other person's feelings...they will be hurt and angry. Also stand your ground. There is a good reason that you don't want to marry that person and they shouldn't be able to pressure you into it if it isn't what you want.

I have. We were dating got engaged and she did not want to set a date. This not setting a date went on for 1yr in which I took back the ring and left her. I guess during that year I thought about it adn knwe she was not going to set a date with me so it honestly did not hurt all that much.
