we were like best friends. He regarded me as a best friend anyway. He has a girl friend now.

OK, so why can't you still be friends? If he or his girl friend are so shallow that they can't have friends outside of their relationship why would you want him?
Or ----
Are you saying you'd like him now as a boyfriend? Even though that was not the relationship you had with him to begin with.
Then continue trying to be his friend. He'll notice you and appreciate you and then .......

I've kind of been in a similar situation, but let me tell you that the best thing you can do is to be his friend, that's it, because that's what he needs right now, and if you're his friend and he breaks up with this girl, then he knows he can trust you and maybe later you can go out together. I hope this helps and I hope it works out for you, it's tough, but if you flirt with him and they break up it might backfire on you.
