I hear Americans and Canadians constantly worrying about whether food is organic. How would one know if a fruit or vegetable is organic and why is this currently such a big worry in Europe and North America?

Organic foods are supposed to be grown without chemical pesticides.

They're technically not healthier for you at all, but they are supposed to be healthier for the environment. The idea being that you're not dumping tons of toxic chemicals onto plants to get a good yield.

That said there's some controversy over the fact that they can use natural pesticides, but these are strictly monitored and are supposed to be used sparingly.

Anyhow, there's also hope to make sustainable farming, because you have to put nutrients into your soil in ways other than just using spray fertilizers. For example by adding in composted material. This should help with the problem of farmers farming land until their soil is no longer fertile.

Also it should help farmers in poorer countries, like in Central America, where pesticides that were banned in the USA were used after the ban and had bad consequences.

It can also help good animals keep living if there's less pesticides on the land, like bees which pollinate crops and help get better yields and even the frog population which is in trouble but are very useful for keeping annoying bugs at bay.

So in conclusion, if you want to buy them, don't do it because it's better for you, the nutrition is the same so is the taste, do it because it's better for the environment. Also if possible always buy local produce to help support local farmers.

Hope this helps.

Yup.It's foods that have been allowed to grow on their own. Without the help of pesticides or hormones. It's actually a good thing. Sometimes when you go to the supermarket you'll see a really really big mango that is red in color, indicating that it's ripe, but when you go touch it, it's rock hard! That's because they put hormones in it that speeds up the growth process but simultaneously stunts the natural process of ripeness and flavor. Remember, you're eating the hormones/pesticides too. And the food industry knows this which is why organic foods are so much more expensive, they figure if people wanna eat all natural, they souldn't mind paying a hefty price. That's government for ya!

Organic means natural source of vegetables, fruits, i think also animals. Organic is things that grown in nature and not behind hot dark machines - eg: organic eggs are the eggs that the Chicken is sitting on it in the farm, and the egg is healthy, natural and organic. But a place with millions of chickens who are put under the fake light to produce eggs, is like machines working like machines.

Same goes to fruits, veges, and everything else.
Just grab one and eat it, don't think too much of which one is organic which one isn't. You can feel the taste of a tomato which is done like plasitc taste, and a tomato that is sweet and lovely and tasty - organic
