Reason tells us that if all humans suddenly disappeared the most likely candidate to take over, if any, would be a descendent of the other great apes.

Ah, yes, my friend you have touched on the greatest question there is. Darwin thought he could tell us where we came from but forgot the most important part, where are we going?
Of course, and I am sure that evolutionists have a theory as to that to. If only we could sped up this thing called evolution and see for ourselves. If we could do some "natural selecting", but surely, artificially, and know just what will happen.
Hopefully a person with "intellectual design" on his own mind will sit on a beach and write a theory as to the future. And many will believe it. Go figure.

The roaches and ants; they've spent a lot of time earning their place on this planet; of all the creatures they have the best chnace to survive. If you're talking the next self-aware creature, I'd go with either the dolphin or the chimpanzee.

On the TV special called the future is wild, they predicted that it would squids. They said that the squids environments will be swamps and the squids will adapt an amphibious nature. Their intelligence will be bolstered by them evolving the complex motor processes used to navigate the trees and they will begin to use simple objects in the environment, such as sticks and rocks, as weapons against their predators. They said that the use of tools and weaponry would be the first step in human-like evolution.

Why does some new species have to develop intelligence? I love how the earth has had one intelligent species in 2 BILLION YEARS, yet everyone thinks the next one is right around the corner. Do you get that we are an accident?

Your assumption is that man will not inherit the earth. Not a problem. It just makes me wonder if you ever read the comic book series Kamandi?
