Her name is Arina, she is 7. It is very beatiful russian name (named after Pushkin's nurse, her name was Arina), but I found after we came to Canada that it sounds very similar to "arena". I need an advice from people who grew up here if I need to change my daughter's name let's say to Ariana?
She is a nice and bright girl, speaks three languages(English, French, Russian) and I want her to have a happy childhood and future.

It started a couple of months ago when my daughter asked me: Why my teacher and other school stuff calling me Ariana? So, she is thinking about it, I just want to help her, it is not like I'm gonna do this without asking her. I just don't want her to have 10 years long fight for her name, I don't want her to explain 500 times that her name spelled differently from arena while some stupid kids are teasing her. I understand that you are trying to support me and want to thank you for that. We are an adults, but she is at the beginning of the school age, so wouldn't it be easier just to prevent all issues by changing a name, because I think that actually all of you agreed that it is sounds the same way as arena.

I wouldn't change her name. It's very pretty, and it will only confuse her if you change it. It's not spelled the same way. I had a friend from work who was from Bulgaria and her name was Marijana. Yeah, just one letter off. We called her Maya, but she didn't change her name, it was "her name". Plus, it gave people something to talk about. LOL

Arina is a very pretty name, and the spelling does set it apart from an arena. When I was introduced to an "Arina" I never thought "arena" because (in addition to being a real name), it sounds like a real name.
If the other kids think of teasing her about it, it's not something that would last for very because it's such a benign association.

That's a pretty name and has some background to it in a language that she speaks. A lot of names sound like other words. At least this doesn't sound like something dirty or weird. There's nothing wrong with Arina (there's nothing wrong with arena for that matter.) Keep the name. It's hers and it's a good one.

I don't think you should change her name. My name is Yaniv which has always been very hard for people to pronounce and spell. I think people will adjust to her name and sure she may have to correct them but it's her name and there is nothing wrong with it. The great thing about America is that it's a melting pot and we have people come here from all over the world. Many have unusual names and they don't change it. I think it's cool to have a unique name.

Don't wory about her name. If she wants to change it when she gets older, that's up to her, but you named her that for a reason, and changing it now wouldn't be fair to her or yourselves.
I grew up with lots of different named kids, after the initial shock factor of the name, it's going to be her personality that makes it or breaks it, so to speak.
Now-a-days, at least in the US, parents are naming their children things like summer, asia, rain, etc. The fact that her name happens to sound like another word in the english language shouldn't mean anything to you.

I have never heard it before and love it. I wouldn't change it at all. Lots of people in Canada have names that are hard to spell.
When I got married, I acquired my husband's unpronounceable last name. When it comes to filling out forms or talking to people who need to write it down, I say the last name, spell it slowly, pause, say it again, and spell it a second time. By the second time, they will spell it back to me and get it.

By changing her name you are making her have a complex and it will be coming from you not her. I would love her like you always have and go about your lives like you normally would. She can just explain that her name is Russian and be done with it. I think it is a Beautiful name.

Teach her the signifigance behind the name and let her know why you thought it was beautiful when you named her. As kids get older, they often adopt nicknames. Perhaps she will be called "Ree" for short! You never know. She has that option. Her name is special and sets her apart from others. It would be sad to change it.
