personal i doubt whether, in the event of a nuclear/biological war that wipes out the ENTIRE of mankind then there would in fact be no baboons to take over the world.
however even if mankind were no more i doubt baboons would become a dominant species. Mankind even at its beginning developed primitive weapons and used fire to their advantage, early man realised that he was no mach for say a wolf, but if there we 6 or 7 men with long pointed sticks then they were more than a match, baboons haven't showed an intelligence on this level. though it may be true that they are the worlds second most intelligent beings they are worlds behind humanity. personally if there was no mankind then i think either we would see an entirely new strain of life which isn't around today or their would be no supreme species.

If we killed ourselves, the baboons would likely be gone too, cockroaches and microbes would be the kings of the planet then. Anything that did survive would show how life adapts due to circumstance. Those creatures that don't die from radiation, and are still fertile will produce offspring that are more likely to withstand radiation. Eventually if intelligent life reappears, then they might withstand radiation, if that trait doesn't get bred out. Then nuclear bombs will only be a little less deadly.

The successor of Man will be, initially, physically similar to man, however, it will have a different mindset.
Evolution is a concept that needs to be believed in order to make it happen. This belief is the missing link in nature...
It has been drummed out of man by Religion over the last 15-20,000 years - and only when enough peoples minds are free will evolution in man continue on a global scale...

Some apes have been using sticks as weapons for some time, but only using them to hit other apes. Apparently there is now a group of apes who have worked out that if they sharpen the sticks they can use them to stab other animals. It's interesting, but not surprising. If your hypothetical war happened I would be shocked if apes DID NOT become the dominant species. Maybe "Planet Of The Apes" is not too far off the mark.

Hmm! I think Num 1 Kev above is having a wishful day - we will eventually die out as a species - but by that time we will have evolved further and left this planet for pastures new!
We are not gonna die out in the next 1000 years so don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen!

some chimps already use spears they fashioned themselves to hunt.
yeah, people will probably kill themselves off (although i don't see how having a nuclear or biological war is anything NEAR "success") & another species will become the top of the food chain, possibly another primate.

Well if we were wiped out by a nuclear war we wouldn't be obsolete, we'd be dead. And if another species eventually evolved to become as intelligent as us, it wouldn't be our doing.

No where in the theory does it state that evolution has to be an improvement.
