Most doctors will tell you that you should drink at least eight 8oz glasses of water a day for good hydration. So that is about 64 ounces total.

According to my Dr., I am supposed to drink 8 glasses (8 ounces each) of WATER per day. This does NOT include the coffee, tea, soda etc. that I also drink. These 8 glasses are to be consumed DURING the day from the time I get up to the time I go to sleep so; I drink 2 glasses in the morning, 1 on my break, 2 at lunch, 1 on my break, and 2 at dinner. It keeps my Dr. happy and gives my body the amount of water it needs to be healthy.

You should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. As a rule of thumb, you should drink a half ounce of water for every pound of body weight, unless you're very active, in which case you should increase your water intake to two-thirds an ounce per pound of body weight daily.
Thus, if you weigh 120 lbs., you need to take 60 oz. of water, or a little less than 2 quarts or 8 glasses of water. If you are 210 lbs, you need to take 105 oz of water, or about 7 quarts or 13 glasses of water.
8 oz = 1 regular glass of water
32 oz = one quart (4 glasses of water)
128 oz = one gallon (16 glasses of water)

Actually that's not true anymore. Someone is supposed to drink half of their weight in oz.
Ex. If someone weighs 200 lbs. They need to drink 100 oz of water to actually be completely hydrated.

The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3.0 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.
Studies have produced varying recommendations over the years, but in truth, your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are and where you live.
Though no single formula fits everyone, knowing more about your body's need for fluids will help you estimate how much water to drink each day.

I was told by my Dr. that a person should take their weight and divide it by 2. The number you get is the total oz of water you should drink a day.

64 oz is the recommended amount but no more than 80 oz.
A doctor once told me the best way to get the right amount for your individual self is to divide your weight in hald and that is how much you should be drinking aday.
