My dog whose is still young, 6 mo, a little dog, only 9 pounds, will eat dry food, but she doesn't really like it. She will only eat it occasionally which I think is when she is really hungry. She still prefers it to be moistened. (like it was when she was a puppy, soaked it in water to soften it up when she was being weaned). One time I mixed some canned food in with the dry food and of course she picked out the canned stuff first and then ate the rest. Should I try to mix in the canned stuff or is it nutritionally better to get her to eat the dry stuff by softening it? Could it be than her teeth just are not strong enough yet and that's why she likes it soft.

My dog hated dry food. But she needs it because it's good for her teeth and better for her health than the wet food. But me and the vet agreed that we would put a bit of wet food with the dry food. Now she loves her food. Before you go ahead and buy some wet food consult with your vet and see what wet food would be better for your dog. my yorkie loves it now and i hope i helped you!

Dogs that eat mostly moist food lose their teeth much earlier than those that eat dry food, which is why my dogs and cats eat dry. I realize canned tastes better, but its no healthier, and in the long run, very costly in dental vet bills. A 6-month old dog should have no problem eating anything she wants, they have very strong teeth. They make that puppy food, "little bites" or something like that for small dogs, try it. It might just be that the type you've been feeding her is too large a morsel.

Her teeth are more than strong enough!! If you read the labels on canned food, you'lll see that you're paying for a lot of water and that, nutritionally, it doesn't compare.
Your dog needs dry dog food both because of the better nutrition, but also because canned food isn't good for her teeth. A lot of small dogs have dental problems and feeding them hard food as well as brushing their teeth regularly will go a long way towards helping keep their teeth healthy - which keeps the whole dog healthier.

There is nothing wrong with good quality dog food - canned or dry. Actually, we mix both for our dogs, with the majority of food in the bowl being dry.

dry stuff is better because it cleans their teeth espically small dogs because they are prone to dental problems.. I have 2 small dogs and I only feed them hard food. Plus giving mine soft food makes their poop runny even if it is high quality stuff. The canned food is mostly water too. I don't like to feed it to my dogs. There is nothing wrong with it I just don't see the point.

digestively it is better for her to have just dry but there are something that will not eat unless it has wet. you should not give her to much it can cause diareahha. if she will eat it soften with water then do that. she needs to eat and her teeth maybe sensitive and that may be why she waits till she is desperate. you can call a vet and tell him the situation and they will be able to guide you better.

I asked my vet this question. she said 'how would you like to eat dry cereal every day for your whole life?'
She recommends mixing a little moist with the dry.

DOn't give him canned food. It will give him the diareah. Call your vet, and ask for a good dry food, he will eventually eat it. if he dont like it.

I'd go with the bagged stuff. It is cheaper and it doesn't smell. It is just as good for your dog as the canned stuff.
