Take tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the insects head as possible and pull. Examine the tick after you pull it out to make sure that you have removed the head as well. If the head remains remains, it can cause an infection. Then pour some rubbing alcohol over the area you've removed the tick from (unless its near the dogs eyes and so on). If your in an area that has Lyme disease, and your dog has not had the vaccine, then you need to contact your veterinarian to see what he/she recommends. The signs of Lyme's disease include: lethargy (weakness), swollen joints, and a area on the skin where the tick was pulled from that is red and circular (its referred to as a "target" mark).

If you have finger nails long enough to grasp it close to the skin then pull it out otherwise a tweezers works great. check the tick onces its off and make sure the head is still attached sometimes the head can get under the skin and that can cause infeciton and irritation. How big is the tick if its huge and fat then really check for the head and also for babies. . Then keep a eye on the area where the tick was for swelling or any sign of iching or soreness. You don't have to rush off to the vet for this. You really don't have to worry if your pup is vaccinated for Lymes disease. Good Luck!

If you can get your puppy to stay still enough, then light a match, blow it out, then touch it to the tick while it's still hot. This will make the tick let go, then you can grab it and kill it. Otherwise, if you just pull it out the head is pretty likely to stay in. Also, make sure your puppy is vaccinated for lyme disease. If not, then I would go get that done asap.
