don't let him/her on the bed or sofa, constantly point towards bed, and use voice commands.

the bed has to be a plce where the dog feels comfortable and has to enjoy being there, so forcing the dog to go there doesn't work.

i use crates and think they are great, for house training when they are puppies and later for travelling, but the dogs enjoy using them just as much as their own little dens whenever they need some quiet time, and they will retreat to their "dens" to rest whenever they are open in the living room!

when you want your dog to go to it's bed, make him get off the couch/bed etc. and with body language and maybe a command tell him to go to his bed. if he goes in that direction, follow him and when he goes to the bed go over to him and pet him and give him a treat. Get up and if he follows you, gently but firmly tell him to go back and give him another treat if necessary or just praise him. if he stays there without following you, praise him. it also helps to put his bed in a spot he likes being anyway. for ex.: he likes that spot right next to the coffee table? why not putting his bed there? maybe later on, you can move the bed to a preferred place and the dog will follow!

I use the command, "Go to your bed" with all of my dogs. They each have their own bed, so nine different beds, all throughout the house, and then some. They can sleep wherever they want, but when I tell them all, "go to your bed", they all run for their own beds.
Make sure your dog actually likes his dog bed, as some dogs really do prefer one kind over another. Use a treat to lure him to his bed, telling him, "go to your bed" while you do it, and once he gets there, tell him to lay down or settle or whatever you use for resting. Most dogs, when they go to their bed or are taking a rest, will lay down automatically, especially if the bed is really comfy and they like it there.
Make sure to reinforce this behavior whenever possible, such as when you want him out of your way, when guests are ariving, and such. It is a good way to also practice "stay".

crate train her. Put the bed in the crate, and when she goes to bed on anything but her own bed in the crate, drag her to it and lock the door. Eventually she will get the hint.
