First wash with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Secondly make sure you are using something on your hair before you straighten it to protect your hair from being dry! Try Matrix Sleek Look http://www.matrix.com/products/sleek_look/styling_cremes.aspx
Then make sure you are using a shine spray at the end. My hairdresser always uses Paul Mithcell The Shine:

Good luck!

I have super thick "horse hair as well", make sure you use a killer conditioner in the shower, perhaps a leave on, then i would reccomend using john freida's FRIZZ EASE hair serum before and after you blow dry and straighten. It does wonders and gets ridd of that 'fRYed look!
Good luck

You need infuisium! I may have spelled that wrong but you can find it just about anywhere. If you wanna be cheap you can try some mayo. Just comb it through your hair like conditioner and let it sit for about 10 minutes(but becareful, if u leave it in too long cuz you'll be a grease-ball!)good luck

Me too. I got John Freeda's hair serum. You apply it to towel dryed hair and style as usual. You can get it at wal-mart, drug stores, etc. It makes it more soft and shiny when using a straightening rod.

Applying leave-on moisturizers after you straighten your hair or apply baby oil before you straighten your hair.both should help.
