This question is more profound that it may first seem to the average player;because perhaps 90% of club golfers are not able to do just this very thing!
"Letting the club do the the work" means letting the club head truely swing down through the ball; having first, imparted, well directed energy, to the club head by throwing or hammering down with the uncocking of the wrists in the early part of the downswing, of course, well co-ordinated with the correct lateral shift and unwinding of the lower body just as in a good throwing action.
When you throw a ball, in the golfing sense, downwards, no further energy can be imparted after the moment of releasing it from the hand. In the golf swing we do not release the club from our hands, however, after the release (uncocking the wrists) in the golf swing, between shoulder and hip height, no more useful energy can be imparted to the club head; (though we, erroneously, tend to think we can, impart more power, right at, and through impact) and it must swing freely through the ball.
Think of the most simple swing posible a pendulum. After raising and releasing the pendulum it will swing freely with increasing speed downwards until it passes the lowest point;more power can be added by applying force at the highest point downwards, but then, the pendulum swings downwards and forewards without further force being applied.

If you understand all this, then it is almost certain, that you are already a very good golfer: if not , then you need lessons with a fully qualified P.G.A. professional and then get some serious practice in!!

I watch the Golf Channel all the time, so I know what it means:

It means that you shouldn't try to help the ball in the air. Hit down on it and the loft of the club will do the work of getting the ball in the air, you don't have to help it.

In baseball you hold on as tight as possible and swing as hard as possible. in golf grip the club firm to keep it from twisting when you strike the ball but not to firm to so it changes the angle of the swing. Swing smooth and constant, not too hard letting the "club do the work"

This means that you shouldn't over swing, let the club pull itself through your shot. When I started slowing my swing down and "let the club do the work "my accuracy improved as did my scoring.
