My doctor is an Indian Brahman and I do not know what that
means.

It's not Brahman, it's Brahmin. They are the highest caste in the traditional Hindu caste system. They are reputed to be the most learned and generally are the priests in a society.

Does it matter?

In simple language, Brahmans (or Brahmins) are the people who volunteered to take the responsibility of spreading the education and awareness among the masses. Though they were not part of the ruling groups, they have influenced India more than any other single group. Most of the time this group stood against the tyrants and dictators.
