best places to buy are lomography.com, i can't buy from there because they don't take my card, so my cameras have mostly come from ebay! can pick up some good bargins there, mostly shipped from Hong Kong.
as for cameras, i second the LC-A, it's a good allrounder, but watch out how much you pay, i've seen them going for insane prices! but i fortunately bought my one from a friend for £12! you can get different lenses for different effects that fit both the LC-A and the Holga (a medium-format camera, awesome effects, but the film and processing is more expensive).
my first lomo camera was the 4 lense actionsampler, a really fun 35mm and quite cheap, so it depends on your budget.
warning: this will be addictive and you will end up with more than one camera! i now have an actionsampler, fisheye, frogeye (underwater), 2 Holgas (one with hotshoe, one without), LC-A, a 35mm Holga and 2 1970s SLR Zenits!
and for the best effects buy Slide Film over regular film, then you can cross process and get mad colours.

look on
www.lomography.com
there you can search through the different cameras and get examples of what other people have done with them this is how i chose my camera. I have the supersampler and the actionsampler. You can also buy the cameras here but some are quite expensive so try ebay for buying.

If you are worrying about choices regarding which lomo camera to purchase you are in luck. There is pretty much only one choice, the LC-A. In terms of lens choices this is a fixed lens camera so if you want to zoom into a subject my suggestion is to stand closer to your subject. Below is a link where you can go to purchase your camera.
