I'm actually not even sure if all mp3 players would be able to play music on the stereo using USB. I know the iPod would for sure, which is what I have.

To answer your question, the adapter is usually easy to find. I just bought a Sony stereo that has an front AUX plug in for my mp3 player and I found a 3.5mm adapter for the plug in at Walmart for about $5 where best buy wanted about $21 for the same thing. but the adapter is really easy to find. an ipod adapter is the easiest because they assume that everyone has an ipod. so look around..

I've never seen an aux-input device that used a USB plug for the input. Much more common are RCA jacks, a 3.5mm (mini headphone type) jack, or an iPod connector. If you tell us what kind of vehicle you have, or what kind of stereo, we can recommend specific adapters.
