Ligaments connect bones to other bones. The suspensory ligament attaches to the cannon bone at the top and divides to attach to the sesamoid bones and wrap forward to join the long extensor tendon at about the level of the coffin joint. The main function of the suspensory ligament is to support and prevent the "oversettling" (hyperflexion) of the fetlock. The upper portion is mainly an anchor for the ligament itself adding to the strength of the pastern.

The suspensory ligament of the navicular bone is in the form of a strong sling which supports weight and absorbs concussion. It upper portion is at the sides of the pastern bone.
