I find it is confusing to use two terms and have even heard that 'parakeet' it not the correct name for them. If this is true, then is there such a bird as a parakeet? If you know please give some detail.

It's not a mistake to call them parakeets, it is just another term for them. A parakeet one of several parrot species. The term is descriptive and used for small to medium-sized, long-tailed parrots. A Budgie is one such bird, but there are several others, including the Carolina or Green Parakeets.

Budgies are called parakeets. It is just another common name. There is no parakeet species
The first post was thinking of canaries.

Technically, I think that some people (who do not know species) calls every little bird a parakeet (lovebirds, budgies, canaries, even sun conures), and because budgies are the most common pet small bird, the name got mostly associated with them.

The Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus, nicknamed budgie), the only species in the Australian genus Melopsittacus, is a small PARROT belonging to the tribe of the broad-tailed parrots (Platycercini); these are sometimes considered a subfamily (Platycercinae). In the latter case, the budgerigar is sometimes isolated in a tribe of its own, the Melopsittacini, but this does not seem to be correct; it is probably quite closely related to Pezoporus and Neophema.

Though budgerigars are often called PARAKEETS especially in American English, this term refers to any of a number of small parrots with long flat tails. The budgerigar is found throughout the drier parts of Australia and has survived in the inlands of that continent for over 5 million years.

There are several species of parakeet, the budgerigar being one.
So Parakeet is the blanket term.
Budgerigar is the specific.

google parakeet pic. Yes there are parakeet. Myself they are birds....close enough. I think a yellow parakeeet sings, a bugie gurgles more in its throat. Parakeets are yellow or white. Budgies are greyish and look fatter.
But what do I care - birds.

budgies are indeed budgies --- parakeets can either be lorikeets or ( as i would be putting my money on ) love birds --- similar in size --- but way off in temperament --- even if you have a pair --- they'll tear you to bits --- stick to budgies . good luck
