If the gums are slightly swollen or tender, chances are you have beginning gingervitis, a gum disease caused by bacteria. If it is serious, you would be hurting and asking the question in a different way. See link below:
http://www.perio.org/consumer/proto2/healthygums.htm .
Using a water pik 1-2 times daily helps, especially if you add listerine to the water. Use it to stimulate the gums. Takes a week or two and you will feel better. Personal opinion, not medical. You should see a dentist or peridontist. The plaque on the teeth cannot be cleaned by yourself. Doesn't hurt much hehehe.

You should see your dentist as the previous poster suggested. It can be caused by other things though than gingivitis. You may be brushing too hard. Taking meds like Motrin/aspirin/even certain vitamins that can thin your blood and make you bruise or bleed easier. Also, if you are using any of the bleaching products they can irritate your gums so you need to brush really lightly as can the high alcohol content in some mouthwashes. If I'm hurrying I find I brush too hard and irritate my gums and they bleed so I use a kids extra soft toothbrush. I do get regular dental care however so I know I don't have an underlying dental problem. If I'm going through a bout of bleeding gums, I just brush very lightly and floss very delicately for a few days, and yes, yuck, I'll take one night and just rinse my mouth out with warm water to allow my gums to heal overnight, then brush lightly but thoroughly in the morning (usually when my husband is out of town!)

Bleeding gums means you need to brush and floss more often. Brush you teeth after every meal. If you can afford an electrical toothbrush, get one, they're more efficient. Also floss at least once a day, and try to eat less sugary, sweet things. A mouth wash will also help.
If you do these things your gums may bleed even more in the beginning, but better hygiene will eventually help to make your gums healthier, and you girlfriend will enjoy kissing you more!

If they bleed everytime, you probably have gingivitis. You'll need to go to a dentist and get your teeth and gums cleaned. It's not a painful procedure, but afterwards, you have to maintain your teeth by flossing, brushing well and rinsing your mouth out with antiseptic.

If you have bleeding gums that means you probably have the start of gingivitis. You need to see your dentist and get this checked out right away.
