Your question is: Next to English, what is the most popular, important language in the world?

English is the lingua franca of the business world - whether in America, Europe or Asia. So it is very important in the sense that business contracts and stock quotations are done in English among the developed and most of the developing countries. Thus the great economic impact.

However, if we say popularity, Chinese is the most popular language because it's spoken by at least 1 billion people.

I say this because I would have stated here "Chinese" in answer to your question. However, to stick to your question, my answer would be French. In fact, it is the preferred second language in the United Nations. It is spoken in Canada, France, by most Europeans and by many in Africa and some parts of Asia which were former colonies of France.

It is important to distinguish between the amount of people who speak a language and the importance of a language. I think the far east languages or the most spoken, however after English I think that Spanish might be the second in importance.

After English which is used world-wide, in Europe's business world it is German. The most spoken language after English is Mandarin. My son is in China now finishing a 2 year course. Spanish is not used so much in business, so if that is what you are after....what is Spain known for? After it got rid of the Moors and Jews 400+ years ago it went 'dead' and relied only on its wines, and later like many 3rd world countries on the sun = tourists. What would poor ol' Spain do if it didn't have sun for wine, and sun for tourists?
