The line is very thin, so it could be a combination of the two

I heard a long time ago that it is a matter of the IQ. That the genius IQ level is so high, and being so high it borders on going mad. So it would be a matter of being in the safe genius IQ zone versus going over the IQ genious zone resulting in madness. I honestly am not sure if this is true or not, but it might be on the internet somewhere.

There are plenty of well adjusted geniuses... just go to a school like MIT.

Madness is overrated.

I have heard that there is a correlation between high IQ and mental illness.... and I do believe that.

But there are plenty of people who don't fit into both categories. Namely, geniuses without mental illness and mentally ill without high IQ.

Edit: I should say that madness is not overrated as an experience itself-- the experience can be quite amazing and really there are no words to describe it.

However, just to say that madness makes you a genius-- I wish that were true!

Sometimes people being perceived as "mad" are genius'.
Sometimes they are schizophrenic. Sometimes they are savants.
But most of the time they are people who function better in a situation they can control(learning, books......), than relating to human beings. Of all of the genius' I've known, none were very effective communicators.

depends on the person, I always like to say you have to be mad to be a genius, but I'm mad although not a genius.

I think this is a 'catch 22' question or a rhetorical question. no write or wrong answers. Or a question that will never be answered.

I don't think that they go hand in hand. Some people are just mad and dumb as a post. Some genius are relatively sane...
