jedi maiden: ahhh, the mysteries of the genitive case! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genitive_case

It bugs me too.

Randy G: I'm no American so I don't know if I qualify as a 'liberal democrat' (I guess so, but it is VERY black&white thinking) and the American public education system is a joke. Spending billions and billions on defense and throwing a tiny bony for education to keep the 'liberals' happy does not equal a solid policy.

Bad Liberal: this entire thread is full of giggles, but the post you mention is one of the (unintentionally) funnier ones.

Pamela V: would you say you are being persecuted? Are you a christian by any chance?

Cheryl: that snark would have worked better if you had not used the possessive form. Yeah you can change it but we will both know it was there.

LX V: yeah, Necessary is a *****.

Jesus' apostrophe still bugs me.
It should be Jesus's.

2007-03-15 02:41:43 · answer #1 · answered by Jedi Maiden 2 · 3 7

No, Jedi Maiden, you're right. Apostrophe-s only follows a plural possessive (as you know). There's only one Jesus - so it's Jesus's.

Perhaps if we could find a bible verse that could be interpreted as "If you don't observe the basics of spelling and grammar it doesn't matter what else you do, Jesus won't forgive you and it's an eternity of spelling bees in HELL for you!"

(Anyone else chuckling at the other (homophonic) spelling mistake in the "correct" post above me?)

EDIT

Wow, this has turned into a humdinger! Another one insisting that the genitive case doesn't apply to Jesus (below)! It really IS a special normal-rules-do not-apply situation with Christians - bats are birds, the whole Earth can be seen if you climb high enough, donkeys talk, and if something belongs to Jesus, then it's Jesus'.

Actually, I'm having to think again about that talking donkeys business...

In the 1950's my American English teacher did not teach the genitive case. It is taught in other countries other than America. It looks totally incorrect to use Jesus's in anything American because we would all think it to be incorrect. As you can see I'm not an international person and it is very hard to teach an old horse new tricks.

I have a bit of dyslexia and you are very rude! My heart was broken by my own family because they hurt me by calling me dumb. I am not dumb! I get close enough for people to know what I am talking about. And close enough for the spell check not to work. There is no reason to make attacks on another person's intelligence to make yourself fell smarter. No one hates it more than I do that I have a problem with spelling! Do some studying! Some dyslexics are quite intelligent. I read a book and saw a movie about a woman who was so dyslexic that she was unable to even read. She was made fun of but she over came and became a Doctor! If you were to listen to me talk you would not call me dumb! You would not know that I am somewhat dyslexic. I am working on my spelling all of the time. .I am of normal intelligences so don't insult me okay, That is being a bully! You are talking like a juvenile Delinquent! So you can spell? Well good for you! This makes you superior? How? I say you are arrogant, and shallow!

Jedi Maiden you are wrong it shouldn't be Jesus's, that's grammatically incorrect. It is Jesus' because his name ends in an "s" therefore it would not be right to add another. There are other words that follow that rule.

"Faith-based spelling" whatever that is, doesn't work either way. I am religious and I spell correctly. All I do is capitalize the first letter of words/people of importance; e.g. The Gods, The Temple, They etc.
Plus I always use spelling aides provided.

You know there are certain words that make me thankful for spell checker. With or without faith I can never spell certain words right the first time (Necessary, vicious, and irritable are but a few).

I believe the correct way that is said is "That is one of the more funny one's"

You should look into finding a grammar check.

If they can't spell, then that might explain why they also have more reading comprehension and fail to grasp the concept of a hypothetical question.
