One week ago today, I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted. I was told to take 2 Advil every 4 hours, as needed. I was also given some Percocet (1-2 pills every 4-6 hours).

As someone who is always leary of taking meds, I tried to avoid the percocet as much as possible. For one week now, I have been taking about 12 Advils a day (2 every 4 hours) -- roughly (2400 mg). Whenever possible I have tried to take 1 Advil (instead of 2) and there were a few periods where I would go an extra hour or two when I could bear it. I have 2 Dry Sockets on both lowers, so it has been pretty rough.

I went and saw the dentist again this morning and told him I was concerned that I had been taking 12 Advil a day for a week straight, and he said it was ok, but I have doubts.

I'm going to cut back to 1 pill at a time (200mg) and see if I can bear the pain of these dry sockets. I may actually switch to taking more Percoset to offset the amount of advil I have been taking.

Thanks in advance,

Henry

I also just dug up a few other interesting things I did not know. Supposedly prolonged Ibuprofen use can cause liver damage, and perhaps more importantly, using Ibuprofen will actually slow down the healing process.

Too much Advil can cause stomach upset, stomach ulcers and bleeding so tread lightly -- which you are. Prescription ibuprofen is usually in 400 to 800 mg doses, sometimes higher at doctor's choice, usually prescribed every 6 to 8 hours depending on need. Basically, stay away from acidy foods and be aware of stomach irritation like acid reflux. Personally I'd lose the Motrin and use the Percocet-- at least at night to sleep. Like anything else, meds usually aren't harmful or addictive used short term as prescribed and you shouldn't have to be in pain or torture yourself by trying to last that extra one or two hours. Not to endorse alcohol use because you may as well use your Percocet, but my mother opted for the "brandy and tea" medicine when she had to get her's pulled several years ago and had issues! She certainly caught up on her sleep! Good Luck - I hope it clears up enough you have a decent weekend!

I would follow your dentist's recommendation and not try to tough it out. When I had my wisdom teeth done, the pain was worse than with my C-sections! Having said that, I agree with you about the Percocet, I always try to avoid those also, even after major surgery. I always feel so woozy and don't trust myself driving, cooking, using knives, etc. So since life has to go on, I prefer the ibuprofen also. Maybe just try taking the Percocet at night so you can sleep.

Right now I'm trying to hang on till my scheduled shoulder surgery next month to repair a major cartilage tear and tendinitis, and I'm taking a lot of ibuprofen also, up to 2400mg. daily. I take 3-4 at a time, 3-4 times a day, according to my doctor's recommendation. I can't really take anything prescription because it will interfere with other Rx's I take. I don't usually have gastro problems with ibuprofen, but I always make sure to have something in my stomach, even just milk or crackers. Seems to work OK. I'll be glad when the surgery is done though, this is really just taking the edge off the pain.

Best wishes to you, I hope your mouth heals soon.

Stop the Ibuprofen now, The pain should be calming down by now. Ibuprofen is wonderful but it wears off too fast for the wisdom tooth dilemma. If it still hurts take the Percocet and don't drive. But the healing has begun and the pain will be gone soon.Ibuprofen is bad for your stomach, short term, and bad for your liver, long term. So if you want to go with the 2 every 4 hours use regular aspirin it's not bad for your liver. It will still bother your stomach though. Hopefully you are on an antibiotic to prevent infections.

Like you, I'm leery of any pain medications. But as these things go, ibuprofin is certainly preferrable to percoset (in my opinion.)

When I had a pinched nerve in my shoulder and I refused to take the pain meds the doctor offered, preferring to take ibuprofin instead, the doctor told me it was okay to take as many as 3 every 3 hours.

A different doctor said the same to my mom with regard to her back pain.

Overall, I don't recommend taking any kind of pain meds that have a warning label about the possibility for addiction. (I always look them up on webmd.com.) Hope you feel better soon!

800 mg a day should be more than enough. Prolong usage will rot your liver as well as your stomach. Drink lots of water and watch a good comedy on TV to help you release endorphins to deal with your pain.

Ibuprofen can be used for its noninflammatory effect, at doses between 1200-2400mg per day. It's important to be taken after meal, because of its gastrointestinal side effects.
