Exercise would help, YES! You can also check into what you are consuming before you are retiring for the evening such as anything caffeinated or large amounts of food...this will disrupt sleepiness.
You could also try reading prior to going to bed, that works for me!
I understand your concerns about sleeping medications, however Benadryl is dafe, non habit forming and won't make you have that sleep "hangover" the next day.
Good luck! :)

Actually sleeping pills make you sleepier when your awake because it goes past the stages of your most important stage of sleep. You could benefit from a relaxing massage from a massage therapist they can help with the stress that you are experiencing help you educate your body or even yoga this helps you get in touch with whats going on in your mental state either one of these is way better than sleeping pills which are habit forming. both yoga and massage are healthy for you they aid in metabolism overall relaxation and learning what is going on to cause you not to sleep. As for sleeping pills your body is only sleeping through the cycles two nights out of seven. Also caffeine late at night make it hard to sleep maybe you are drinking coffee to late ? Well good luck try a more holistic approach they are better and the side effect are better for you!

Everyone goes through that once in while. Some folks never snap out of it! You can deal with it....

No sleep contributer's :

coffee after 4 pm
job stress
growing older
hormonal changes

anyway... sleeping pills from grocery do work, but some don't wear off by the next day. I've heard people rave about prescription meds working and don't affect your performance the next day.

You have to start actually DOING something in your life.. Everyone needs to sleep..that's the fact..!!!
Maybe you should go to the late night practices, or start running early in the morning (oh, dear-i hate that)... believe me it works..! soon you will want to sleep more, instead or sleeping any at all!!!! good luck
