The very best burgers don't contain anything. If you can, and you have a food processor, you can grind the meat yourself. Season lightly with salt and pepper and make quick work of forming the patties. It's best not to hand the meat to much or overmix it. The meat will become tough. The other secret is to cook it until it's done but not over done. The flavors for the best burgers come in the toppings and in the quality of the bun. I like bleu cheese and bacon and caramelized onions with some Dijon mustard. Of course, they're your burgers and you can add your favorite toppings, but keep the burger pure until it's time to top 'em! Have fun! What time? I'll bring the beer!

Actually a little known fact is simply....seasoning your meat in advance so that the flavor is marinated throughout the burger. Plain salt and pepper thats been mixed in with the beef and has been left to marinate either for a few hours or done the day/night before being cooked will give you the basis of a better tasting burger....everything else you add on it is just..."the topping" :) Try it this way one day and you'll notice the difference too...

I recommend mixing different kinds of meat. Beef & Pork, Beef & Chicken, and Beef & Turkey all have good results.
A tablespoon or two of red wine makes for an interesting taste. Paprika will make your burgers taste like hot dogs. I have had good results with adding a spoonfull of mustard. There is always minced or powdered garlic.
If you have a jar of pickles handy, try a spoonfull or two of the juice. Another odd sort of idea is to mix in a few tablespoons of pineapple juice.
The bread, in my opinion retains grease. But the grease is where the flavor is... so it should work.
Sugar, honey, and maple syrup all can be tried.
You may want to round up a few different things and custom mix individual burgers for your guests.
Good luck! Have Fun!

I add to the meat: 1 egg, Worcestershire sauce (approx. 1 teaspoon), panko bread crumbs, a blob of chili sauce, some grated (not diced) onion, salt and pepper. Make the patties firm but don't overwork them. Everyone likes something different, why don't you experiment with adding flavours that you like - grated cheddar, chives, chopped jalapeno, chopped olives, the sky is the limit!
