Excuse me, but in aviation, 1970's is not old... That's fairly modern.
An aircraft hangar built in the 1970's will look pretty much like ones built today... A square or rectangular metal building with a big sliding door on one side.
There were also lots of "T" hangars built during the 1970's. T-hangars are small individual buildings designed to store a single light airplane, built in long rows, back-to-back with taxiways in between.
A 'quonset hut' style hangar, with the arched roof, was probably built in the 1930's or 1940's.

What it looks like will depend upon what it is you are trying to house. For something like a Cessna, a lot of hangars are basic pole barn type construction with two large sliding doors. For something more a kin to a 747, well, you can just imagine the size. The doors slide as they do on the smaller hangars, but are sectioned and move in ten to fifteen feet sections at a time. The doors (on most) also have a cut out for the upper portion of the rudder/vertical stabilizer.
I have to say though, that my favorites are the old drigible hangars at Tustin and Moffett Field. They're some of the world's largest free standing, wooden structures.

The Tillamook Air Museum is based in a WWII blimp hangar. I know it's a little before the time you requested, but impressive, yet. Google the museum.

Take a look at some of these: http://www.earlyaviator.com/archive3.htm#aero
For JetDoc: I wonder what she'd say if she knew my 411 was a 1965 model and I've owned it for 16 years. Ah, kids.
