I think this new air tax that they are trying to bring in and rush through is just another tax to complement the losses they are going to experience as people will be smoking less.
I also think they set the date at July 1st as it's summer and lots of people sit outside pubs for the summer months so by the time it's winter again, people will be used to smoking outside.
I'm already considering becoming a hermit and only going out to pubs/clubs for special occasions (ie friends or familys birthdays).
I don't know how people can say it's working really well in Scotland when I keep reading about pubs going out of business and closing ??
Alcohol is a major problem, causing many diseases and also causing a vast majority of traffic accidents but no one seems to do anything about it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good old drink but believe I'm an adult that can decide for myself when I've had enough - as I also believe with smoking. Surely it's my personal decision. As someone else said before me, why can't we have smoking and non-smoking pubs??
Let people choose for themselves.
Rant over

hear hear. did you know a huge proportion of alcohol related violence happens round clubs and pubs purely because everyone's outside waiting for taxis and kebabs etc and groups of drunk men start attacking each other - can you imagine what's going to happen when they're all forced onto the streets pissed up to have a ***? It will be mayhem. Plus they'll be smoking less so they'll be even more wound up.
The public health is going to suffer alot more with all the fists flying outside than it would if people were allowed a lambert and butler with their pint. And all the people walking past will all be passively smoking, instead of the ones who chose to go into a pub and hence arent too bothered about their health anyway. And there'll be cig butts all over the ground. Why on earth not just have separate pubs for smokers and non-smokers, or separate rooms? it's madness

As from 1st July 2007 you will not be allowed to smoke in a public establishment including the workplace, many companies are introducing this earlier.
I do not think it stretches to people smoking in the street (at the moment)
I run an engineering business and do not smoke myself (business partner does however) but we allow the smokers to smoke on the shopfloor, but from 1st July they will have to smoke on their breaks only and outside.
Business partner used to smoke in the office we share, and as he is quite a heavy smoker the office was filled with smog all day long, the office stank, I stank of cigarettes at the end of everyday and the customers noticed and commented.
I think so long as there is a designated area outside for smokers then it fair for everybody then - I'm not a big anti-smoking campaigner by any means as all of my family smoke.

Apparently, 1 July 2007. Personally I can't wait. Even pubs that have no smoking areas make you walk through the smokers to get to it. Agree with you that things might kick off although Scotland seem to be doing ok.

When are they going to ban cars so I don't have to breath in their nasty fumes???? I am a car owner, by the way, but this ridiculous smoking ban is getting on my nerves. I mean, come on, there are lot worse things regarding our health that the government is just not concerned about. Some of my friends said they won't be going to pubs anymore, they'll hold parties at their house instead.

i live above a pub in scotland and got so sick of the smokers under my window making a noise and being unable to open my window due to the smoke coming in that on one occasion i tipped a bucket of cold water out the window and soaked them all. i thought it was hilarious but much to my horror half an hour later the cops were at my door and issued me with a caution. i have now moved home and enjoying the peace and quiet. (ps- ironically im a smoker too lol)

We have had the ban for about a year in Scotland and everone has complied with it. Not heard of any problems at all. It will be ok once you get into the habit of going outside for a smoke.

The nicotine addicts won't stay in a non-smoking pub long enough to get drunk because of their sad craving.
Most of today's smokers (not all, granted) are common and chavvy,so the pubs are better off without them. They can get drunk at home and poison their illigitimate sprogs while they're at it.
As for comparing smoking and drinking..they are quite different..I can drink without forcing you to do the same.If I smoke I am forcing you to inhale my smoke whether you want to or not and to endure smelly clothes.

I think it might be May. I live in Scotland and didn't think it would ever work but it really has and now when you are out you never even think about it. Most people comply as have all businesses. I was on holiday in England last year and that was the ONLY thing that annoyed me, the smoking. But by the time we go back in July there will no longer be any smokers inside!

When it took affect in Scotland we stopped going out - the off licence shops do well - at least you can smoke and drink in your own home, there is lots of pubs closed in Scotland since the ban.
