I have a gallon of latex tan and a quart of a rusty orange. I am trying to match a strip in a rug.

Here is the challenge, can I add a quart of gold (the decorative accent style gold and I think it is not latex) to the latex mixture.

Latex, of course drys quickly, I tested this gold and it took about 2 days to get totally non tacky.

What would happen if I mix them? Would they just take longer to dry or would it just make a total mess?

Thanks in advance for all knowledgeable answers.

latex paint is water based, that means you can add water to thin the paint, you used water to clean your equipments, the other type of paint is oil based, you need thinner to thin the paint, & terpentine or kerosine to clean your brushes etc, the 2 types CANNOT MIX , if you're not sure mixed a little (use different containers if you're taking paint from the big can) mixed them & let it stand for a few minutes, if its water & oil based paint, most of the oil based paint will float to the top, if both are water based the color will remains the same after you mixed them

It would probably just make a mess. I've tried to mix different types of paint and most times it never comes out how I like it. Latex has different chemical properties that don't mix well with other paints. I have repainted walls several times and I find it works best if you use the same kinds of paint if you are mixing, that way you get the consistency and the texture you want.

you only want to mix water based with water based paints and oil based with oil based paints. if you're rust color or gold is oil based, dont mix it with your latex tan. if your rust color/gold is acrylic (water based) then you can give it a whirl...i wouldnt particularly recommend it for outdoor applications though. it sounds like your gold color is oil based...and if attempted to mix with latex will look like oil in water...it wont mix. test it by mixing a small portion together. if the gold balls up and wont cling to the latex paint, then it is surely oil based.
