The first one is:
I plan to propose to my girlfriend and give her a token gift at the time and then travel to Denmark to a place where you can make your own ring. It starts off at gold dust, you melt it, mould it, put in diamonds, patterns... right through to polishing and engraving it. I think that it is a great idea to make your own ring but is this going against tradition? what is your opinion.
Second question, does a man also wear an engagement ring or does he only get a wedding ring?
Slightly confused so any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you everybody.

We both live in Switzerland. I plan to take her to the lake district in the UK propose to her and then take the night ferry to Denmark, make the ring there and fly home.
Why Denmark? Well I can't find anywhere else in the world where you can make your own ring. I have contacted them already and they can accommodate all types of ring design and the price is about 10% more than on the high street.

She/we will make her ring rwo days after I have proposed to her. So there is not that much of a long wait.

Just one additional detail. It will be my girlfriend and I that make the ring. The goldsmiths are just there to tell us what to do next and to make sure that we don't mess it up.

I think that's a great way to make your rings more special. Typically men only get the wedding band, but in this day and age it wouldn't be unheard of to wear a band of some kind once you are engaged.
I think that unless your girlfriend is extremely old fashioned, she will love the idea. Plus, the rings will always be special because you designed them together, from start to finish.
good job!!

You aren't really defying the engagement tradition. You are asking your lady for her hand in marriage and you will eventually signify the promise to marry her with a ring. I think that is so romantic that you are allowing her to make her own ring.
No, a man doesn't generally wear an engagement ring. According to the old school values, the engagement ring is a sign that a woman has been taken and isn't available for marriage to any other men. A man only wears a wedding ring.

Truth be told, lots of grooms to be do exactly what you are doing, they ask first without a ring in hand---I think purely because they fear what they will do with the ring if she says no. But thats another post lol. If money is no object, then sure go ahead with your plan....just remember to formally put the ring on her finger....we all remember THAT particular moment forever. If you can't really afford this plan, then modify it....where you get the ring or who made it becomes moot when compared to the excitement of a union with you and a marriage....really....in all honesty, I can't remember the name of the jeweler or the location where we got my engagement ring but I can tell you every single detail about the day I got it and how my husband prepared me for the surprise.....
It is not against tradition for you to make your own ring. We chose mine together because my husband had found a stone that he loved but couldn't picture it in a setting. I don't know if they make your ring right there on the spot--but for us it was a couple of weeks before he could pick it up. Make sure you have done your homework before you get there, it would be easy to see you diamonds/gold m ixes that are a lot of hype with no more quality especially with the glowing bride-to-be standing there and the emotion and anticipation of it all---they may be nice folks, but they need to make money. The suggestions to read up on diamond clarity, quality and gold prices is a very good one.

Making your own ring sound romantic but most ladies want to know they have a perfect ring on their finger. She may already know what kind of thing she fancies. Have you heard her mentioned anything/ look at certain rings?
Traditionally men do not get an engagement ring and both parities wear a wedding ring. Traditionally, the wedding rings should be plain without stones- the continual shape symbolizes your continual relationship.
We had our wedding rings engraved on the inside...perhaps you could personalize the ring (s) subtly to make them extra special.
It's a hard task- if you don't know what she wants I would consider confiding in a friend of hers or a sibling ;-)
Best of luck!

I think letting her make her own ring is incredibly romantic and a great idea!
I thought it was only the woman that wears the engagement ring, but according to wikipedia, the man wears one also in some countries...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engagement_ring
I guess it depends on what the two of you want to do. Maybe you could make your ring at the same time and according to wiki, you wear that as your engagement ring.
What ever the two of you decide - that is the right answer.
Congratulations and good luck!!!

I would have loved to have my ring made from dust. It would be one of a kind. The idea of men wearing engagement rings is something that I just saw on the news a few weeks ago. I don't see anything wrong with it but my fiance said he would never wear one. I think it would be up to you and how comfortable you are with wearing one.
I still think going to make her ring from dust is the most romantic thing I have ever heard.

Gee, what a cool idea! I think designing your lucky fiancee's ring from beginning to end is a wonderful idea, and very special. I wouldn't worry too much about tradition. She will have a ring that's unique. As far as an engagement ring for you- something I haven't seen before, but why not? Congratulations!

Thor, she won't feel engaged until she has that ring. Buy her a ring and put it on her finger, then go to Denmark to make the wedding rings. It's a great idea, but don't make her wait in token engagement purgatory.
Men don't wear engagement rings.

that is such a cool idea!!! maybe propose to her with a loose diamond not mounted in a ring, then when you go there, she'll already have the diamond that will go into the ring. and yes, men can wear an engagement ring if they chose to, although its not traditional.
