I have an 11 month female chihuahua and a 9 week old male. We want to breed them eventually, but I heard that you should wait until the female is at least 24 months old. How long before my male trys to "get busy"?

And China.... I do realize that he's waaay too young now but I am worried that I am going to have to separate them because he will pounce on her too early.... for a professional breeder you are very rude and not at all helpfull, I would expect advice from someone who knows dogs, not a pointless answer. Both dogs are AKC and are from Champion blood lines, I plan on having both of them checked out and screened for any kind of problems they may pass on to the babies, and i realize that it will be pricey and I'm fine with it, all I wanted to know is WHEN THE MALE WILL START TO MATE! If it's too early obviously i will separte them. Thank you all for your comments and keep them comming if you want to offer helpfull advice becase that's what I am looking for.
And China... thanks for nothing! LOL

He will start trying around 6-8 months. Watch them carefully and keep them seperated while she's in season. This may mean having someone else keep the male while she's in heat. Just make sure whatever you do, no breeding happens until she is 2 years old. Small dogs especially have a hard time if they get pregnant while they're young.
Added: Yes, she can get pregnant when you don't think she's in heat because you may not notice she's in heat. Some females keep themselves so clean you may not notice. Or she could be in heat but not bleeding yet. No matter what, you have to keep a close eye on them.

Oh, It matters how old they are when they are ready to get busy...You need to wait for the female to mature into an adult, and you are right, 24 months, which is 2 years. But, the male, I am not sure about. If you are planning on selling the pups, you need to make sure you get their genetic testing done to make sure they do not have any genetic diseases or anything..and that can get very pricey. I would think you would have to wait for the male to mature enough too...Meaning he should be at least 1 1/2 years to 2 years old.

18-24 months for males 24 months for females

Males usually can start to have the right stuff at about 6 to 8 months of age. However their sperm isn't really mature and vital until they are at least 18 months old.

The females needs to be in heat to get pregnant. You really need to read up on this stuff.

There are two things wrong here.. First your female should be 2 years old before you even think about breeding her.. Second your 9 week old it to young to have a clue on what to do. The male has to be 8 months old..You need to really wait until he is a year old. Third there is no way you are ready to breed dogs lol..

Do both dogs come from champion bloodlines? Are they both champions? Are they free of genetic diseases and are the parents and grandparents free of genetic diseases as well? There is so much to consider before breeding dogs and expensive.
