Hmmm
It depends on what you mean by high.
I'm thinking you mean that your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is high and that means your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroid). This would be compatible with you needing Synthyroid.
It won't by itself cause you to lose weight. However, normalizing your thyroid hormone levels may make it easier for you to do so. You may find you have more energy as hypothyroidism can lead to a degree of lethargy or lassitude.
You may find it easier to be more active, more outgoing, exercise more and stick to a healthy diet regime when things are normalized. It will be this, rather than the thyroid hormone itself, that will cause weight loss and improved fitness.
(Please note that if it is in fact your T4 that is high and your TSH is low, you have hyperthyroidism - an overactive thyroid and Synthyroid is exactly the OPPOSITE of what you need.)

The official stance is "Thyroid hormones, including Synthroid, should not be used for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss." It is not designed to make you lose weight, BUT when your thyroid starts using the Synthroid you should have more energy and you will probably do more because you feel better.
If your eating habits don't change and your activity increases you should lose some weight. Take advantage of the increased energy and us it doing something you enjoy that uses your whole body.
You can also use some of that new energy to research foods that will help support your thyroid function and cook them at home with the freshest ingredients available. Sushi is good because of the seaweed and you can us crab meat, shrimp, or anything you like to stuff it, and it's fun to make. Use organic and local items when possible.
As you start increasing your activities try weight-bearing exercise, especially thing that make you bounce like a rebounder (mini trampoline) because bouncing exercises stimulate the lymph system which helps cleanse your system of toxins that could be contributing to your condition.
Most importantly make sure you talk to your doctor about this. You are the most important part of you medical team, and you control your treatment.
Get a copy of your test results and your official diagnosis and research, research, research. Know the warning signs of a bad reaction, and keep track of your emotions, and how your body feels. You will need a good relationship with your doctor because your thyroid levels will need regular monitoring.

No, it won't help with weight loss, however when on the correct dose you should not gain any more. Also, you should be able to lose weight with diet and exercise. Just make sure to always test TSH in the morning and to keep your morning TSH no higher than 1.0.
Join a thyroid weight loss group. I'll post one below. Now that you are hypothyroid, read up on the topic. You will know what questions to ask your doctor this way.

It should be a little easier once your TSH levels normalize, but still not easy. It will take a lot of work to get the weight off.
