If your claim to normality as a child was seeing your parents drunk......honey, you have nothing to worry about, unless of course the influence of drink has caused other problems along with it.....we all have a drink at times & get merry etc.....we all as children knew/know our parents have a drink......no biggie on it's own Babe...
I've had a few drinks with my children but they are all adults now.....no I never got out of it when they were children....good god! I couldn't have functioned properly with drinking alcohol....so I guess I would say...that's not normal really....my mum often got drunk but not when I was really tiny, heck she did a lot worse than that I can assure you.....

I don't think there is a norm here, so you are searching for an answer that doesn't exist.
To answer for myself, I never saw my parents drunk. They didn't drink at all. This made no difference since I did and came to use alcohol excessively myself.
Norms? About 25% of the current population abuses alcohol and results in out of control behavior when using on a regular basis. The other 75% seem able to limit their use to what is called social drinking and only have rare overuse to the point of drunkeness.
These statistics aren't going to help you in any way to determine if what you experience is "normal." If you want to do some research, it's library time. Check out AA, Rational Recovery, etc.

There is a charity called Nacoa (www.nacoa.org.uk) where you can find lots of information about growing up in an alcoholic family and resources in any kind of support. There is no lower or upper age limit to be affected by your parent s drinking and sometimes the problems only become apparent in adulthood. You can be affected regardless of whether you are still living with them, whether they are still drinking or even if they are still alive or not. You can always phone the helpline (0800 358 3456 Monday, Friday and Saturday 12pm - 7pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 12pm - 9pm) which is free, totally confidential and will not show up on the landline phone bill. Or if you do not feel comfortable talking to the volunteer helpline counsellors over the phone, you can email.

I hope this helps.

I saw my mom drunk a number of times. I helped her to bed a number of times. I really could not tell you how many I believe there were too many to count.
I don't think that is normal for everyone but really what is normal now a days. Normal is what you are exposed to all the time.
I will say my daughter is 16 and she has only seen me drunk twice. I was scare of embarrassing her. I guess that I felt some of that from my mom.

I’d have to agree with Gary L’s answer / "I don't think there is a norm here, so you are searching for an answer that doesn't exist."/

Alcoholism is a huge problem and effects many families in the world.

Even if you do not drink yourself drunk/abusive parents can still affect you:

Not so much when I was a child,my dad is an alcoholic, but my mom left the situation before I was old enough to realize it.Once I turned 21 and was legal to drink,I started going to the bar w/ my dad once a week,he's now 67,and knows it's a problem, but at his age he's not going to completely stop, though he has cut down alot. But even now when I go out w/ him it's just a few drinks,he never gets sloppy!!

I don't remember ever seeing any of my parents drunk during my childhood. My mom is pretty much a sportist, my father a bon vivant. So as an adolescent I saw him a couple times tipsy, but never drunk.

we lived with my mom only and she was drunk a lot of the time when we weregrowing up. Not a pretty sight and bad for children to grow up in that environment.
