I am an engineer, this is a most interesting question. I think an engineer is one who can see what can be. We are not limited to what we can phsically see, we are only limited by what we can not imagine. An engineer can translate math, drawings and raw materials, into reality.

I've worked with lots of engineers and scientists. In the world of business the best ones are not those that are good at reciting knowledge or writing papers, but are the ones that can understand and translate that knowledge into practical applications. The former may be good at the university level, but they don't usually fit in well on the job.
Good engineers understand the nature of a problem to solve, or have a full grasp of the goals of a project. They have a talent for balancing time and resources. They are good communicators with great interpersonal skills. They are very competent in their knowledge, but they have a real world skill of applying it to the task at hand.
The best engineers are really creative. Applying scientific principles to problem solving and developing new and better ways is the essence of innovation - the word that describes the best engineers.
Finally, a good engineer is always learning so that he/she stays on top of new technologies. They become great resources that never grow stale.

Scientists go by strict rules of science. The word 'engineering'
means skillful maneuvering or intelligent way of obtaining
a solution to meet the need. Scientist spend years to
obtain the theoretical back ground. The engineer sits down
to find practical ways and means. When some machine
using a wheel for personal locomotion was required,
the engineer did not sit down to find the theory or to search
for design rules. He took a wheel and arranged a seat
on it. That is how the first mono-wheel cycle was made.
Science topics are rarely inter-disciplinary. Engineering
is multi-disciplinary. An engineer tries to use components
or materials from any field to obtain the first working model
for the requirement. Formulation of design equations and
methodologies for optimization will follow later.
If scientist is man with a powerful mind, an engineer is a
man with powerful hands. He uses any thing and every
thing possible to arrive at a working solution for the
given problem.

Being able to determine what you are really trying to solve or accomplish. All the calculations in the world are useless if it does solve the REAL problem or goal.
