Here's the IRS Where's My Refund link to check the status of your return and refund:
https://sa1.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp
HOWEVER, that is only a resource to use AFTER you have filed your taxes and you know what you are expecting back. If you mean that you just basically want to find out, and that you have not already filed a 1040 or 1040A or 1040EZ form, then there is NO WAY to find out until you have actually filed a tax return.

You will only know that amount once you complete your tax return.
You can:
1) Download the forms from the IRS website yourself, http://www.irs.gov
2) Buy a copy of the TurboTax software. It will guide you through the steps.
3) Pay someone else to do your return for you.

Go to www.irs.gov after you file your tax return. Click on "Where's my refund". Then enter your ss #, filing status, and refund amt you (or your preparer) entered on your return. It will verify the refund amt and tell you the date to expect it. If you miscalculated the refund amt, it will give you the new amt and a clear reason why they calculated a different amt.

Look at your tax return. It's right there near the bottom of the form.
