This type of thing is usually a scare tactic used by people who don't like tats.

When you went to the shop, did they use brand new needles that came out of an autoclave pouch? (they should show you as they're setting up) Was the ink put in little plastic cups? Did you ask about thier autoclave and sterilization practices before hand? Did they use clean gloves and change them often? Was the tattoo area clean? Did the artist dispose of the needles in a biohazard container afterwards (many artists will break the needles too)?

The only way you can get hepatitis from a tattoo is by coming in contact with infected blood (I would assume you're talking about Hep C, which is the one that is almost always associated with these stories). If you did your research on the shop you went to, asked the correct questions and watched the set up then you should have nothing to worry about. If you went to a scratcher, got a tattoo underage or had it done in some guys basement, I would go to your doctor for a blood test just to be on the safe side.

you can have it for yrs and yrs without symptoms
you need a blood test to find out

if they used clean ink meaning the filled disposable plastic cups from a larger one and used a sealed needle out of a clean package or sterilizer you should be fine
also make sure when you go into a shop they have a inspection notice posted that they have been inspected and are a clean place all lagit parlors need to have inspections and have to pass them from the health dept
