E.coli is present in the fecal matter of infected mammals. Any way to inhibit your contact with this infected fecal matter would reduce your chances of getting E.coli.
Always cook any meat that you are eating until it is completely done. Beef should be brown, not pink with an internal temp of at least 160. Chicken should be white all the way through and 170. Meat thermometers are cheap and easy to find at a local supermarket.
Always wash your hands well before eating and after using the restroom. Carrying around an alcohol based hand sanitizer is a good idea as well if you can't get to a sink to wash your hands.
Though e.coli is most often found in undercooked beef, you can also get it from drinking unpasteurized milk or juices, definitely avoid those. E.coli can contaminate fruits and vegetables as well so be aware of any recalls or word of a possible outbreak in your area and always wash your produce well. A mix of water and vinegar does the job nicely.
E.coli can be found in water, if you are using a water park, public swimming pool, or any body of unchlorinated fresh water be extra extra careful about keeping the water out of your mouth.
Good hygiene and food safety precautions will go a long way in preventing e.coli. If you think you have any of the symptoms (cramps, diarrhea, blood in your stools) get to a doctor right away.

E.coli lives in everyones bowel, and is totally normal. It's only when people dont use good hygiene after using the toilet that you get sick. Also make sure you thoroughly wash salad vegies in countries where they might irrigate with recycled water.

Wash, wash, wash.
Wash your hands after you use the bathroom, take out the garbage, or for those who have cats, clean the litter box. And wash raw foods and rinse well before you eat them.
And use Lysol a lot. That will prevent the spread of a lot more than e. coli.

-Wash you hands after going to the bathroom.
-Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating, including the ones you are going to peel.
-Cook your food all the way through.
-Keep your immune system in top form.
Unfortunately, when travelling or eating outside your home - you are at the mercy of whoever is preparing/handling the food.
