my car has been skipping lately and it dies in the middle of the road but it starts back upo do you know what could be wrong with it? thanks for the help!! :)

Check the spark plugs just as the ladies above me recommend, also check distributor and make sure your battery is fasten correctly w/o having dirty connections!

What is the car? Does it shut off at high speeds, accelerating or just when ever?
Newer car, could be one of a hand full of sensors, vacuum leak, fuel pump or fuel filter. If you have or get a check engine/service engine light when this happens go to Auto Zone and ask them to check the computer fault codes. They'll do this free.
Older car(pre 1980ish) I would say fuel pump (especially electric), vacuum leak or fuel filter.
Older or newer I'm not convinced it's plugs since it starts right away.

Maybe the fuel pump. Have it checked out.

You could have a bad spark plug, or possibly a small hole in your air hose.

sounds like spark plugs... i dunno. i'm sorry. i have been having alot of trouble with my car too. so i do the same thing that you do. that way i goto the garage and make it look like i know what i am talking about.
but yeah, the spark plugs would do that. i'm pretty sure...
