They weren't discovered, they were created/manipulated. "Invented" more like, rather than discovered.

Man has been genetically modifying foods since he learned to cross breed corn or whatever plant they started off with. Thousands of years at least.

I am personally more concerned with the effects they'll have on production, humans and the environment rather than with who created them.
