It turns on for a second or two, but once I try piping anything through it, it shuts off. What's wrong and how much can I expect to pay to fix it?

Looks like your receiver is going into Protection mode.

Make sure that all your wires are connected + to + and - to -, otherwise it's a short circuit, thankfully your Receiver shuts down and protect itself without blowing a fuse or itself.

Also, make sure that, if all your cables are connected correctly that there is no errant strands of wire touching the other contact (+ touching -) which will short it!

It may be shutting down to prevent damage. Look closely at each speaker connection. Is any strand of wire out of place? Double-check every connection at the both ends, then make sure your signal wires are plugged into the right sources: You want output from each of your other devices going to the inputs on the receiver.

Your unit is going into protection mode. Most of the time it is caused by something not being correct on your speaker outputs. Check all of your speaker connectiosn to make sure there isn't anything shorted. don't try and double up speakers on one jack because it will change the impedance of the load the amp sees.

you might just have a short and it will shut off by itself to protect it. disconnect all your speaker cables completely and unplug the reciever. check them to see if the wires are damaged if they are all fine connect them all back properly and plug the reciever back in and try it if still no luck take it to a repair shop.
