As one of those things to do before I die, I'd like to dye may hair blue. A hairdresser told me I'd have to bleach my hair first if I wanted a good shade of blue. If you've dyed your hair this way (any colour) is that how it needs to be done and is it possible to get dyes that haven't been tested on animals?

Thank you for your answers. To be honest I'm hoping to end up with a lovely shade of royal blue, but knowing my luck it will indeed turn green.
Thanks for the offer pinkie, I'd appreciate any info you've got.

hello, well yr hairdresser is absolutely rite u will have to bleach it first, if u have dark hair, then put yr blue hair dye on, ive had my hair pink for last 18 months and i did the very same thing, only need to redo it every 6 months or so, i use to just put hair dyes on all over, burgandy, dark brown, and i have had electric blue, but didnt use bleach and it was a bluey/black all over, it was very nice, but made me look very pale, lol. Now im the pinkster, and i use a hairdye not tested on animals, will email u the name wen ive found the lil pot it cums in,later, why not try bleaching a few strands to start with, like i did, then wen they blonde , put blue dye on jus bleached strands and wrap in foil, bet it wd look well cool!! ive just got my fringe and the ends of my hair pink and rest is my natural colour, brown. Should see a pic of it on my 360 yahoo profile, well good luck,, will email u after name of hairdye, they do well funky colours, and hope u do it would love to see wot it looks like,,xpinkiex

A lot of girls on here have already told you to bleach your hair out first where you want the blue to go....but I want to add, if you bleach your hair out to a yellow, putting blue right over top of that is going to give you more of a green color than blue. I've made the same mistake before. You either have to bleach to a more white color, or put a toner on the blonde first. Since you are going blue anyway, a toner with a blue/violet base would work the best. I've had better experiences with N'Rage hair color, or Punky. Manic Panic doesn't last long enough for me, and it's not a very vivid color. None of these colors should be tested on animals, you can check the label on the bottle though! Good luck!

Hi my fiance is always dye his hair different colours and he has been all colour, Even blue and yes the hair dresser is right you have to bleach it first, He has his hair white usually anyways, he uses jerome russel Bblone, to get it that shade of white . Then all you do it put on the colour and you will get a bright blue that will stand out a mile. There is a hair dye called manic panic that isnt tested on animals and they even do the bleach so you can order them bboth together if you wanted. They do all sorts of colours. I was suprised these colours existed in hair dyes.

I have dark brown hair and dyed my hair blue some yrs ago. It took to my hair really well but it was a really dark blue when it first went in then lightened up about a week later. I dont know about bleaching your hair first I thought that would have been worse for your hair. I am sure you can find some hair dyes that havent been tested on animals just search the net

It's your preference but you need to consult your parents to see if they appreciate it. Some parents are fine with it while some are very picky about their daughter looking like some punk (positive or negative). You'll also need to see if it's appropriate with the people you interact with. Especially when the school you're in has a dress code. Some schools do not allow long hair for guys (ridiculous, huh) and some do not allow dyed hair. I have a military style jarhead. It was OK because the school dress code allowed it. I doubt it would be appropriate if I was in a government school. Their dress codes tend to be much more strict.

Natural hair of a dark shade would have to be bleached out first, or the blue would not show as true blue. But if you are a natural blond or silver blond, you don't need to go through that process which, if repeated too often, would badly damage your hair. But then if you are blond, why bother to change. Gentlemen love blonds, remember?

hi fiona!
yes you do have to bleach it up first, but it needs to be quite light, if its too blonde it will go green as yellow + blue=green! so make sure its more of a light beige blonde.
Fudge is the best colour i'd say, i've used it on my own and have probably tried their whole range (including green!)
its only semi permanent but surely thats all you want anyway?
oh and i'd just go for flashes of it rather than all over as the bleach is a little harsh on your hair and scalp!
also be aware that the colour may fade quickly so best to have a spare bottle to keep it up for a bit, it doesnt have to be bleached every time.
good luck, hope it looks funky!!

yes u have to pre lighten ut hair, the blonder ur hair the better the result ive had every colour in my hair, blonde and blue, blonde an pink, red and black was my fave!! be warned tho having a colour like blue or red in ur hair is VERY high maintenance!! the colour needs to be touched up every 3-5 days!! even if its a permanent colour, i used a perm red and topped with a semi red every 3 days, they look awful when they fade an blue fades to a horrible colour!!

I agree that you would have to dye your hair lighter.
Dying it blonde allows the colour to grab and look more brighter.
Once you have dyed your hair blonde, buy a product called FUDGE.
It would have to be the best coloured semi permanent product available in colours like reds, blues, purples etc
Goodluck.You will look great

Yeah you will get a more vivid colour if bleached first. Check for directions or manic panic colour. I really dont think it is tested on animals
