i work at night and if i make a peep in the hallway of my building someone complains. yet its 8 am and people are working on my building (yelling very loudly in spanish outside). people are rattling the mailboxes. i hear water running through pipes. slamming doors, engines revving, cars beeping...it keeps me awake when i'm trying to sleep. this is not fair. i'm already at a disadvantage by having to work all night. can't i sleep too???? i want to complain just like my neighbors do. but then it would just sound petty.

Same thing for me. I used to work 3rd shift, and people would keep me awake....BUT, when I would make noise at night, they would complain. I think we should all be courteous and quiet when living in public places.

Unfortunately, those of us that keep 'irregular' hours are at a disadvantage, this is something in which the majority rules... Try finding a place where you're not right next to someone, even if you can't afford a free-standing house on a large plot, a trailer is less noisy than an apartment building for example.

if you live in an apartment complex, with a management office, you may have some backing. Usually in complexes, it's in the lease- a clause that dictates "normal waking hours" which would be between 9am and 10 pm or similar hours. You'd have to go to the management office and complain and they could post a notice in a common area reminding people to be quiet. But as the other poster stated, unfortunately majority rules, and most people do not work at night, so earplugs may be your best bet.

Hey, just a second, I'll ask the neighbors from H. [sound of kitchen window being raised] "Hey, why are you making so much noise? You know I'm about to go to sleep, you know I work nights. Do I keep you up all night when I am not working? No! So shut up!"
Oh, dear, I can't repeat the answer! and it involved gestures!
Good question, especially when they know I'm trying to sleep. I don't mind the lawn equipment in the summer, Lord knows we all have to mow sometime.
Hee, hee, wait until summer. I get home about 7:30, and I intend to mow when I get home. They are still up at 4am, and the one who works goes to work. The rest go to bed and sleep all morning. Not anymore!
Good heavens, they are a trial sometimes. I was in my car last night, leaving for work at 10:15, pm. I saw movement out of the corner of my eye, and here came a tall man, not the neighbors, around the fence. He looked into the girls window, and the next window, and back around the fence he went. Checking it out to see if Mom was in bed, so he could go visit girl!
Except for my mowing, I am very quiet, especially at night, when most of the rest of the world is asleep. Nobody in the neighborhood even tries to be quiet, revving engines, yelling, loud radios in cars 24/7. and this is a nice neighborhood! I want to scream sometimes, look, nurse here! Hope your relatives never end up on my division, and depend on me to save their lives! Sleep deprived!
I empathize with you, short of moving to the north pole, or Antartica, we will have to deal with the noise.

My husband works nights - so I know what you mean. He gets home around 5 am and everyone else in the neighborhood is just waking up. But this might help - I bought room darkening shades for our bedroom - so it stays very dark in there and I bought a few small loud fans for in there - it sort of "drowns" out the noise.
But unfortunately, I think complaining wouldn't really help. Sorry.

Yup ,I feel your pain! I work from 3am-1pm, But I have let my neighbors know that I work nights and sleep during the day, so they have gotten the hint to keep their kids away from my door. I also asked them when I have had my music on"If it's too loud just let me know" or is it OK? or something like that. So they understand that I try to be considerate of them also. Generally it works out pretty well.
P.S. try ear pluggs #32's they block out alot! good luck

sorry, but there are just more of us than you. I used to work third shift, so I understand what you mean though. Try having a fan going in your room to create some "white noise" perhaps that would help. good luck.
