It's not that we don't want it, it is that it is not available anymore, unless you pay a huge price for it. It used to be the cheap wine tasted pretty good, the cheap shoes worked out just fine, they just didn't last as long as the expensive ones.
Nowdays, the cheap shoes are put together to last while you walk around the shoe store on the carpet, and fall apart the first time you wear them. And the wine, find a cheap one!
And it is all about the bling. The keep up with the Joneses purchases are all people want. They have to have the bigger car, the bigger tv, the more jewelry. Things like a pair of shoes do not matter as much, in middle class suburbia, most people do not know a pair of expensive Italian shoes from a pair of Keds. So why buy them?
Just my opinion.

I think one of the problems is that there is a lot of 'tat' out there! We have become a throw away society, unlike our parents who saved for something good quality. We want everything 'now' and therefore we go for the cheaper option.
Things are made to last like they were years ago either, unless, like you say, we buy quality. But quality costs, and unless you are prepared to save, then people will always go for the cheap and cheerful option.
A good investment item like a winter coat or a new sofa is usually something that people will spend a lot on, and therefore go for quality. But as fashions change so quickly, people will always go for the cheaper (both cost and quality) option, as they know they will only have a short period of time in which to wear it.
Phew!! That was a long one.... sorry about that! :-)

I wouldn't say that nobody wants quality anymore. There's alot of factors to take into consideration. Just because someone buys cheap shoes, it doesn't necessarily mean they don't want a better quality shoe. Perhaps they simply can't afford it. A different example would be that my husband buys jeans at Wal-Mart for work because it doesn't make since to spend $60-$70 for jeans that you're going to be wearing on a loading dock everyday. Instead of paying $60 for one pair of jeans, he can get 4 pairs of jeans and rotate them during the week. Now my husband can afford to pay the $60 for jeans. He makes a six-figure salary. But does it really make sense for him to do that? I say no. That's why I told him about Wal-Mart in the first place. (He had never gone there before.) On the other hand, when I want to go out and have a great meal, we'll do just that - it doesn't matter the cost. It's also about perspective. What's important and what isn't.

Things seems to be made now just to last a short time. It's making money for someone. Fashion and ideas change so quickly. It's the advertising people that do this and this is why people get in debt just to keep up. I agree on cheap bottles of wine YUK!!

There are still many people who want quality these days|
The thing is, manufacturers are not willing to offer it anymore|
In the old days, manufacturers (generally speaking) had a sense of justice|
They took pride in making a quality product, and wanted their customers to be happy| Of course they were interested in making a profit, but it was seen as the just recompense for what they produced and sold. In those days, wild and out of control greed was seen as a shameful thing|
But now it is different
Now the only issue with manufacturers is the bottom line|
Quality (if it even exists in a given case) is seen merely as a means to maximizing profit| Maximum profit is the *only* goal that manufacturers have now| Everything else is a mere means to that| They will sell you straw if they can make a buck from that|
That accounts for all the merchandise that people buy today with infuriating defects, things that work illogically, missing features that you would expect to be there, and that sort of thing|
People often find that when they buy a product, a given feature has been substituted with something inferior - a feature they expected the product to have because the identical product sold a year ago had it|
Now where do I assign the blame for all this?
I assign it to *legalized abortion.*
For what legalized abortion does is corrupt all of society - it corrupts everything it touches - politics, laws, education, economics, and human relationships in general.
For what legalized abortion teaches (and, yes, the law is a teacher), is that we can eliminate another person if he or she stands in the way of getting what we want from life|
The unborn are human beings Anyone who says that they are not are simply lying, rationalizing, or whatever| You can see for yourself by looking at ultrasounds and the other scientific evidence|
Now this legalized abortion inculcates a given mind-set in people that they can do whatever they want to get what they want, regardless of who they hurt or rip off, since if a person's life can be disposed of for utilitarian purposes, then anything goes if it is for a "greater good."
And of course, this mindset has been accepted by the economic sector of our society in that they sell things only to make a profit for themselves, regardless of the injustices inflicted on the consumer|

I totally agree. People don't FIX things anymore. They'd rather buy something disposable and cheap, that way if anything goes wrong they can simply throw it out and buy a new one. Thats why the trades of cobblers and seamstresses are virtually non-existent. Who gets their shoes or clothes repaired anymore?

Because many people like mindless drivel like reality stuff. I’ll admit to watching a few of the soaps but I tend to watch mainly dramas and comedies. I like a lot of the American dramas like CSI, Criminal Minds, Medium, Grimm, Covert Affairs, Lie To Me, Law and Order etc. Since I got Sky I realised I hardly watch any stuff on terrestrial tv, aside from the occasional thing like Silent Witness, Holby and the Accused. I used to love Six Feet Under by the way!

throw away society i think
most people wont wear things more than a few times
so why pay so much
gone are the days of 1 or 2 pairs of shoes and a coat for every season.
people spend less on things as they buy more things in total!
just my thoughts x

Because they want something cheap and fast and they believe it will last as long as quality things. It does not.
