Is it possible that during a sinus infection you wont be able to hear out of one ear? I have a sinus infection and all of a sudden it felt as if my ear "flew shut" and i can hear a ringing out of it but cant hear anything as strongly as i could say 24 hours ago.

I went to the Dr. yesterday for the sinus infection and was given an antibiotic called Bioxin or something.

You most likely have fluid collecting in your middle ear (inside of your ear drum.) That happens when your Eustachian tube becomed plugged by congestion and swelling from your infection. The Eustachian tube connects your middle ears to the back of your throat and helps equalize the pressure inside your middle ear. When it becomes blocked, fluid accumulates (called an EFFUSION.)

The best advice is to take your antibiotic. You can also try over-the-counter decongestants, like Sudafed, to open the Eustachian tube and help the fluid drain.

Holding your nose and blowing is a bad idea because it can force bacteria from your throat/nose up into your ear. If the bacteria get into that fluid collection in your ear, they can grow and cause an ear infection.

I have Eustachian tubes which clog all of the time. After I rinse, I can hear 300% better.
Try a saline nasal RINSE (not a spray) A full warm water saline rinse goes in one nostril and out the other. It draws out all the gunk and shrinks the tissue (like swimming in the ocean). I've been doing it at work too.

The buffered salt doesn't 'sting' as much as plain salt water. You can use a new method like Nasopure, or the vintage, Netipot. The special bottle and salt is about $20.

You can do this a often as you like with no bad side effects.

You don’t need a prescription for this therapy. So if you live in a state like mine, they’ve pretty much “outlawed” sudafed medicine. Drug-free is really the way to go on a frequent-use basis. (I put in a link for “what” and “how” – there’s also some good info on wiki)

I have sinus problems/infections a lot. My ears get clogged up a lot because of it. I tried using Ear Wax softener drops and sometimes they work and sometimes they get stuck inside making the clogging up worse.

The one thing I found that works to clean out everything-sinus and ears--is a Neti Pot. It takes a little to get used to, but once you master it it's great and makes you feel great. Good Luck.

Oh yes...this is VERY normal with a sinus infection! It will throw off your equilibrium as well. Are you taking antibiotics for this? Perhaps you should. Hope you feel better soon! I just got over one...it's no fun.

this would be a simple problem of pressure, hold your nose and blow and it should get worst but swallow a few times and it should get slightly better, if it does not, i wouldn't worry, it has happened to me before, i blew out an ear drum when i had an infection by exerting too much pressure on the ears.

It's good, you went to your doctor. Follow the doctor's instructions plus this one.....Drink plenty of lukewarm water. Also, after dinner, drink a cup of tomato sauce for 3-5 days. I am sure, your strength had weakened. You also need to go to bed early for sure, you lack some sleep.

Sure your nose throat and ears are all connected and this is normal. Just don't hold a nostril shut while you blow your nose cause it can cause damage.

i believe that is highly unlikely but i could be wrong. make a doctor's appointment, it could also be an ear infection.
