You can only get a green card if you qualify for an immigrant category and your priority date is current. If you are not entitled to immigrant status, simply living in the US will not get you anything.
Green card holders can travel as often as they wish, but can't stay longer than one year without a re-entry permit. Every time they return to the US, especially if they travel often or stay out for a long time, they have to convince the CBP that they actually still do reside in the US.

I'm sorry, Faisal, that you cannot seem to get any well-meaning answers here today.
You can go to the links below and get better answers. However, if you're in the U.S. legally, and you're working, your employer can file for permanent residency for you, if you qualify.
With a green card, you can travel anywhere in the world, just like an American. The green card gives you an "unrestricted right of re-entry into the U.S." - which means that you have to be allowed back into the U.S. without a visa determination. However, if you stay outside the U.S. in excess of 6-12 months, this may become problematic. If you're outside the country working, there should be no problem. If you were in the process of naturalization when you made such a time-consuming trip, this may jeopardize your priority on the time scale for naturalization.
Go to those links and get the information you want. It's remarkable how hateful Americans can be when speaking to foreigners...considering that 90% of the posts will be from people whose parents or grand parents are immigrants or the child of at least one immigrant themselves!

Marry a girl from the US, get your damn green card, come to the US and live here for I think its between 1-2 years but you MUST stay married to the girl and then khalas thats it .. divorce her as soon as you are able to become an US citizen. My cousins ex husband did that to her, sad but true, even ridiculous. Overseas men have no life nor no heart!

I think you're supposed to apply for the green card before you enter the US. If you get one you will probably be allowed to take a holiday now and then - usually all you have to do is show your green card and passport to get back in. But if you are planning on being away for very long periods of time (over 6 months) it's advisable to apply for a re-entry permit before you leave. There is no guarantee it will work though.
lol :-)

your question either makes no since to me; or is worded funny. before "he/she" asks who for a green card?... just because you are in the US doesn't mean you are granted one and in most cases there must be a reason for NEEDING one before you can even start the process. needing a job doesn't qualify in the governments eyes. then, upon receiving it; it isn't a season pass to the universe or anything like that, you may have restrictions on it that prevent you from leaving the country, like you said; for years at a time. mainly for reasons of espionage. nonetheless, you will need a passport. Mexico is one thing for the time being. you have to give more details in your question though, sorry.

That is like asking how long do I have to keep a stolen car before it is legally mine?
Being in the USA illegally for any number of years does not qualify you for legal status (BUSH Amnesty has not passed yet!).
Go home! Can't you tell that you are not wanted here? I realize that your country doesn't want or care about it either, but that is not the taxpayers of this country's fault!
Go home and reclaim your own country from the corrupt politicians!
