In my 25 years experience as a service technician, dust build-up interferes with cooling air circulation. It acts as an insulating layer causing components to get warmer than they should be. Too much heat accelerates semiconductor breakdown.

dust on printed circuit boards can change resistance of the "wires" in the circuit (the copper lines) Also heavily soiled PCB can short out

Dust generally contains carbon which is a good conductor of electricity and it can lead to spark and may lead to short circuit. This will damage your costly equipments.

Eventually current can arc across the dust, especially in humid conditions.

Any substance has a resistance to current, therefore dust and other particles laying across traces can conduct current and throw off calibration and/or destroy circuitry.
