Existence is expressed as Coexistence - at all levels. Be it in matter, plants, or animals. These states realize their being in coexistence naturally. While a human being needs to understand the essence of coexistence - to realize the coexistence.
Coexistence is the expression of undivided human society.
There can be uncountable number of factors which could be stated as the divisive forces. Be it organized religion, greed, envy, etc. All of these factors map down to not having understood the truth of coexistence.
It is important to note that there is no proof of human having realized this understanding in history. Behind the divisiveness between humans - the real need is there to come together, and find the reason to relate with each other and realize coexistence - right from the hunter-gatherer age. Humans recognized one-ness based on skin-color, and fought with people who didn’t have the same skin-color. With coming of villages and clans age – the one-ness was being recognized from systems of beliefs and rituals. The fights happened with people following other belief and ritual systems. The organized religions started happening alongside the age of rulers or kings – about 3000-4000 years ago. The religions also weren't able to give the basis for coexistence - instead the divisiveness and communalism actually increased with their dictates. The human history is replete with wars fought over the issues of religion.
Science which came as a reaction to the rigidities of the religion - was first seen as a uniting force across the humans divided in different religions. It invited logic, which religion had not. However, Science didn't recognize human being's essence as the expression of coexistence. Its advents were limited to matter and it reduced a human being as evolved animal. It couldn't explain life, and consciousness. The followers of science therefore always had the comforts and accumulation as their only goals. This created ruthless competition and therefore individualism. This created more divisions - of rich and poor, powerful and powerless, etc.
The important thing is to recognize the basis for uniting humans. That in essence is 'humanity'. Humanity gets realized in a human by understanding existence as it is - i.e. coexistence.

Thoughts and emotions.
Those are the two basic factors. We are all given the ability to think and feel and we are all quite fickle about it. There are billions of combinations of thoughts and feelings for people to have so we all inevitably end up being divided somewhere within all of those thoughts and feelings.
It is portrayed through our beliefs in certain things and that is how we separate from each other or accept one another.
A number of examples : morals, religion, race, politics, age, relationships, schooling, jobs, heritage, location, traditions, etc.
Every little thing in those categories can separate us and then there is a plethora of categories beyond that.

Pride, hurt, greed, and even love. Yes, love, we all love different things, sometimes the things we love go against the things others love, and there's division.
