Experienced here- most police departments will send you to an academy. First you have to go through several interviews, an extensive criminal history background test, often a psych evaluation, and usually an oral board with a panel of higher officers. Physicals and some sort of physcial agility and strength test (like an obsticle course may be used to screen out people before going to the academy which you must also pass to be hired officially). Once you've done this and been screened for drugs they will send you to an academy. Local police deparments have on site daily training, while state police often have dormatories where you will live and train for around 9 months. Different areas vary.
You can also up your hirability factor (I know that's probably not a real phrase) by majoring in criminal justice (somtimes a bachelors degree is now needed to be hired, and usually is necessary to go up in rank to a liutenent anyway) and you can also pay to put yourself through an academy if there is a hiring freeze on new recruits. They will usually reinburse you 6 months after you are hired or after you go through field training.
As for the training program- I found as an educator that the curriculum was a bit old school- mostly lecture based. However, the labs where they teach police manuevers, driving, and shooting were practical and fun. Also, there are usually physical trianing like running, pushups, and stuff. This is usually what they show as boot camp on TV, but unless you are majorly out of shape, you'll do fine. Most places at least give you a second chance. You have to be able to pull a 150 lb sand dummy at most places. . run a couple of miles.. . . do some other requirments. Every academy differs. If you are out of shape they usually have some sort of "fat camp" (I know it sounds bad, doesn't it) where they will work you up to the challenge. It depends on how badly they need new hires.
