Most Tom's toothpaste does contain fluoride.
Fluoride makes your enamel harder. Some say this type of Fluoride is not good for you. I haven't done the research so I don't really know.
Now there's an ingredient called xylitol. It's a natural sugar that kills the bacteria that causes decay. It's in many gums but you have to look at the ingredients. Trident, Carefree Koolers I think.
But I know they put xylitol in this liquid "toothpaste" for babies at the healthfood store. I buy it for my daughter who has many allergies. It does not have sodium laurel sulfate in it which is the foaming agent and many people say is harmful. I think it's made by a company called Spree.
Also I was told by a toothpaste rep. years ago that baking soda does not do much at all and the only reason they put it in toothpaste is because people wanted it.

Baking soda is a natural toothpaste that works pretty good right out of the box. Many brands of 'natural or organic toothpaste don't contain fluoride because there have been some studies that seemed to show too much fluoride could be bad for your health. Most of these studies were so small and ill-controlled that the results could not be duplicated or confirmed. My dentist says the amount of fluoride consumed while brushing your teeth is way too small to cause any harm. But small children who don't understand they shouldn't swallow their toothpaste should be given fluoride free toothpaste to practice with while you closely supervise brushing with fluoride toothpaste until they get the hang of it.
